Partnership Formed by Amazon and Travel Sites to Combat False Reviews

A coalition consisting of Amazon, Expedia, and other prominent online platforms has been formed to combat the issue of fake consumer reviews on the internet. The newly established Coalition for Trusted Reviews, which includes Booking.com, Glassdoor, Tripadvisor, and Trustpilot, aims to safeguard the availability of reliable consumer reviews on a global scale.

“Members will work together to define best practices for hosting online reviews and sharing methods for detecting fake reviews to stop fake reviews at source,” it said in a statement.

The group said it is developing common standards and definitions for the industry to determine what constitutes a fake review.

They also outline best practices for hosting online reviews and share information about how fraudulent actors operate, “such as companies that sell fake reviews to companies that seek to unfairly and improperly improve their reputation.”

Online platforms have been accused for years of not doing enough to prevent fake reviews.

In 2019, the European Union adopted a directive aimed at protecting consumers from fake reviews.
